Queen Cleopatra Was A Syrian
Many African Americans believe that the famous Egyptian Queen Cleopatra was a black woman or person of color. A history search will show that the Egyptian Rulers were not always people of color. For instance, Ptolemy (323 B.C.E), a general of Alexander the Great, started the Ptolemaic Dynasty that lasted until Rome assumed them around 31/30 B.C.E. Ptolemy was Syrian [a Greek like Alexander], and so was "Egyptian" Queen Cleopatra VII (Lover of the Roman General Mark Anthony). History also reports that she committed suicide around 30 B.C.E.
Yeah, I was surprised too.

I've heard that over the years as well. I also remember reading that when Ancient Egypt was "rediscovered", the archeologists were shocked and appalled to find that the people were black and started the whole "All great ancient civilizations were white movement". They did the same with Hannibal. I don't have any links though...but there's info all over the web.

Cleopatra was a title like Pharoh, The President, King and Queen.
There was no one Cleopatra.
Which Cleopatra of which Dynasty?
This queen was a black woman engaging in inappropriate behavior.
And I agree with others, when they ask what are your sources, I know you said books, but give titles and authors of those books.

This information isn't difficult for anyone to find. As regards "Cleopatra," please note that "VII" was included after the "title" if you prefer, which would indicate that there were others prior. [Interestingly, I also read that Cleopatra I was Syrian too.] In addition, dates have been provided. Although this might be sensitive, I didn't make it up.
With regard to books and titles, I see that you enjoy reading, so please feel free to try a local library. If I may suggest, start with Alexander, find out who his generals were, then conduct your research on who they were and what they did after he (Alexander) died. I would appreciate the comments on your findings.
Further, although I think that this question should be asked in a different forum (meaning not in a forum on Black History), I'll ask it anyway. Who do you think was the "black" Cleopatra, the one that was depicted in the movies and played by Elizabeth Taylor? [Rhetorical]

My question is why do u declare something w/o backing? What u've heard and what u've read is cool, but when u're opinion contradicts some of our most learned Afrikan Storians; e.g., Dr. Yosef ben Jochannan a respected for learnings w/three Ph.D.'s; and both honored ancestors Dr. John Henrik Clarke & Chancellor Williams disagree with your conjecture. In fact this is what Chancellor Williams wrote:
"The Ptlomaic period had been largely one of confusion. The division of power among the Greeks, Macedonians and Egyptians, and inter marriages with the later, joint rule, etc., made the Ptolemies at times merely nominal rulers. There were times when a native Afro Asian ruler gained the center of the stage as the star attraction, as in the case of Cleopatra. Upon her death, in 30 B.C., Romans assumed direct control, ruling the country for seven centuries, beginning their reign thirty years before Jesus Christ would be born in the same Palestine where Blacks had lived and ruled so long."
May I ask your purpose for asserting that Cleopatra was Syrian? And instead of you directing sistah Jacqui to a library, u should visit one or an online site. Otherwise u might be seen as one who lied about Ancient Afrikan Stories. Better yet, buy books by either of the three bruthas named above.
Htp.

You know I was not going to respond to his/her reply for me to go to the library, because that in itself showed me what I was dealing with.
I have been to many many libraries and studied many of our scholars like Dr. Ben, Dr. Clarke, Van Sertima and others, that is why I and others questioned your sources.
I agree with BaBa, maybe you should visit a library or read a book from some of our scholars instead of directing me or anyone else to one.

Greetings jacqui
Yeah I feel whacha mean. This may look off topic, but I had CongressWoman McKinney in mind and fired off my reply. I mean, we Black men really need to think more about "having our sistas' backs," beyond staring at that "extra hump" elder Richard D.y.c.k. Gregory refers to... that they have and we men don't.
I hope that's cool with you; bleeve it I know u don't necessarily need a brutha to run interference for you, like a "pulling guard" ona football field. ;)
Seeya soon.
