1evitavresnoc, my soul leaps within the lotus of my heart when I see an American refuse to blindly accept what he or she is being told in TV sound bytes.
The next link is a recent NY Times piece on Obama's financing. Most of it is the usual gushing over Obama's donations from the common man, which is indeed unprecedented.
BUT, if you keep reading down to the next to the last paragraph, you will find that the correspondent, Leslie Wayne, finally does, briefly, admit that less than half of Obama's money, 47% to be exact, comes from donations of $200 or less. Where means your suspicions are dead on. We have been lied to, yet again, about the real Obama.
Obama's Decision is Biggest Threat to Already Troubled Public Finance System
The next link is a site maintained by a group calling themselves The Center for Responsive Politics. Even though our sad excuse for media has been very good about not revealing where Obama's big money is coming from, some of that information is public knowledge. Hence, this site has a cool search engine that lets you track donations from individuals to specific candidates. I just a ran a search on donations from individuals to Obama which were larger than $2300. I got back 21 pages, and a message that there were more but the site will only report back 1000 hits. Hello ....
OpenSecrets
This last link is from the Federal Election Commission. It lists the maximum limits on campaign donation.
Contribution Limits Chart 2007-08
Note that individuals may not contribute more than $10K to individual candidates, which is why the hits from the previous site run by the Center for Responsive Politics only go up to $10K.
But, note also there a lot of ways to get around that $10K limit. The flood gates really get opened up after the primaries because the limits for contributing to a party are much, much larger than for indivudals. Hence, now that Obama is the Democratic nominee, a rich guy who contributed the $10K limit in 2007 to Obama can now contribute another $28K to the Democratic party, knowing that some of that money is still going to be used to get Obama elected.
But, wink, wink, this setup allows Obama to claim that he, personally, did not accept that $28K donation.
Oh, but it gets even worse, much worse. Keep in mind that PACs [lobbyists] can also contribute to both individual candidates and to parties.
Oh, but it still gets worse. Read carefully and you will find that there are ten categories that have NO limits on the amounts that can be contributed.
