I don't mean to be too critical here, but I've got to keep it real.

I love award shows and love to see black folks any chance I can on TV or in the theater. However, I was very disappointed with this year's BET award show. I'll just mention a few items that stood out for me. I didn't think DL was the best host, especially with his dry humor about Marvin Sapp's name--his jokes sometimes fell flat and he zoomed so quickly along. I was shocked at Keisha Cole's performance: Did she forget the lyrics? What was up with her voice? It seemed like she half sang the song. That girl can normally SANG. I couldn't understand anything Young Jeezy and Kanye said and I also couldn't really hear the music. Miss Keys tried, but was not up to the standard that I'm used to seeing from her. It seemed like Jill Scott wasn't really feeling what she was singing like I'm used to seeing. And Al Green, he was one great King of R&B, and I really wanted to hear him sing, but he kept letting the audience sing. I found the best performance of the night to be Rihanna. Her voice came through in good tone and quality, loud and clear and she looked gorgeous. However, her song sounded like pop music.
It will be great to see some new old school style singers come to the forefront, who can really make a
live concert worth attending. Amazing things are done in studios these days, but where are the people who can sing and make you feel chill bumps? People like Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill, R. Kelly and Musiq Soulchild never go out of style.
Oh well, maybe next year. I'll tune in as always.
