On a strict physical analysis, the electro-chemical interdependence of the body has ceased to function. This is probably a cascading function where some large, critical organ or section of an organ in the body ceases to send to other organs signals of its health and vitality. Perhaps built into the operations of the cells (either in RNA, DNA or mitochondria) there is some threshold of signals from other parts of the body that must be maintained for that organ to continue its operation. So basically, what i'm saying is that our organs have a 'suicide switch' that gets flipped when they receive little or no information about other parts of the body.

In a more meta-physical analysis, we could say that conscious aspect of "The Unity" [call him Ament, Allah, Yahveh, Olodumare, Muntu etc] has withdrawn its consciousness from the localized being who has just 'ceased' to live. And without this link to the infinite conscious, the finite body cannot maintain the integrity and interdependence of its energy-field which either is or undergirds the animating force of the body [which then results in physical death].
