Obviously, Granny is leaving out a few details. But, the guy was clearly where he was not supposed to be, so who cares?

It was not wise for her to go back in the house, get her gun, and then start hunting for the guy. Note that if he had been armed, she would have been shot as soon as she attempted to open the door to where he was hiding --- assuming that part of her story is accurate.

The safest approach would have been to go back in the house, get her gun, get her granddaughter, and then go next door and call the cops. Let the cops be the ones to risk getting capped flushing out the bad guy.

This is actually an example of why having a gun is not always a good idea. People hear enough of these types of stories and they start thinking their gun makes them invulnerable. They forget that the bad guy might have a gun as well.
